Small Incision Cataract Surgery

A Modern Way to Remove Cataracts

Small incision cataract surgery is the most modern way to remove cataracts. After anesthetic drops are placed in the eye, the doctor makes a 3 millimeter incision at the edge of the cornea and inserts a tiny ultrasonic probe. This probe vibrates and breaks the afflicted lens into tiny pieces, while a suction device attached to the probe removes the fragmented lens.

Once the cataract has been removed, the doctor implants a foldable intraocular lens into the eye to aid in focusing ability and improve vision. Because the incision is so small, stitches are not needed, and the eye is not patched. The whole surgery usually takes less than 10 minutes, and most cataract surgery patients experience visual recovery within 24 hours.
