Laser Cataract Surgery

One of the latest advanced in cataract surgery derives from use of advanced lasers to make incisions in the eye.  The precision of femtosecond lasers has been utilized at Bloomberg Eye Center in LASIK surgery for many years.  Now this technology is available to enhance cataract surgery as well.

Benefits of Laser Cataract Surgery:

  1. More precise incisions. Incisions done by hand are never as controlled as those done by laser.
  2. Intra-operative imaging is used to visualize eye structures not otherwise visible by the surgeon. This allows incisions to be placed more precisely for better centration.
  3. Application of the laser allows for more gentle removal of the lens with less ultrasound energy and less early corneal swelling.

Limitations of Laser Cataract Surgery:

Results:

This is exciting technology that has the potential to produce better vision. Studies on visual results so far are mixed.  Most people feel that a competent surgeon can achieve excellent results with or without laser assistance.

Cost:

This technology is offered in conjunction with premium implants and is generally not covered by insurance. Patients are responsible for non-covered services.  Our surgery counselors will go over all details during your visit so you know all your options.
