What are Cataracts?
Cataracts refer to a condition in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing glare, and affecting a person’s ability to see clearly. Cataracts rarely affect younger people, while people 60 and older are at the greatest risk of developing cataracts. Other factors, such as certain diseases and injuries, as well as heredity, can also increase your risk of developing cataracts.

Small Incision Cataract Surgery
Small incision cataract surgery is the most modern way to remove cataracts. After anesthetic drops are placed in the eye, the doctor makes a 3 millimeter incision at the edge of the cornea and inserts a tiny ultrasonic probe. This probe vibrates and breaks the afflicted lens into tiny pieces, while a suction device attached to the probe removes the fragmented lens. Once the cataract has been removed, the doctor implants a foldable intraocular lens into the eye to aid in focusing ability and improve vision. Because the incision is so small, stitches are not needed, and the eye is not patched. The whole surgery usually takes less than 10 minutes, and most cataract surgery patients experience visual recovery within 24 hours.

Lens Replacement Options for Cataract Surgery Patients
Once the clouded, natural lens has been removed during cataract surgery, an intraocular lens is implanted to aid in focusing ability, usually eliminating the need for glasses and contact lenses. Today, advances in lens technology allow for focusing at a variety of ranges and in a range of lighting conditions. These lenses are foldable, allowing them to be inserted through the small incision made during cataract surgery, leading to a quick recovery.
We use the following types of intraocular lenses at Bloomberg Eye Center:
ReSTOR®
The ReSTOR® multifocal lens allows for quality vision at a variety of lighting conditions and distances.
ReZoom™
The ReZoom™ lens has a tapered, multi-tiered surface of concentric rings that both gather and transmit light evenly, allowing for a full range of vision at close, middle, and distance vision.
Crystalens®
Crystalens® is the only IOL that is controlled by muscles in the eye so that it bends and flexes to adjust to lighting and focusing conditions, just like your natural lens.
Read about how ReZoom™ multifocal lenses have helped Dr. Shahinfar’s patients, like golf legend Gary Player, restore their full range of vision after cataract surgery.
